Women’s Basketball Adds Raven Gerald to Complete Incoming Class

4/29/2010

BALTIMORE—UMBC head women’s basketball coach Phil Stern today announced that Raven Gerald has signed a National Letter of Intent during the spring signing period to join the Retrievers in the fall of 2010.

Gerald, a 5-8 guard from Piscataway High School in Piscataway, N.J., was the 2009 Home News Tribune Player of the Year after averaging 17.5 points per game as a junior. A two-time First-Team All-Area selection, she also tallied 16.3 ppg and 4.2 rpg to go along with 98 assists and 90 steals during her senior season. Gerald finished her high school career with 1,541 points, and she totaled 108 three-pointers during her final two seasons.

Gerald led the Chiefs to three county championships in four years, and she was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 title game and also played an instrumental role in Piscataway’s run to two straight Greater Middlesex Conference championships and the sectional finals, scoring 34 points in the 2009 state sectional semifinal game. She was also selected to play in the NJSIAA Senior All-Star Game.

“Raven is an athletic and explosive guard who has excellent 3-pont range and can play both the ‘1’ and ‘2’ positions,” Stern said. “She comes from a great family and is an excellent student, and she rounds out the incoming class perfectly.”

Gerald joins classmates Chelsea Grover, Dana Lewis and Amirah Tucker, who signed in November.
