Cassidy Earns America East All-Conference, All-Academic Honors

3/4/2010

Carlee Cassidy is the first Retriever to earn all-conference honors three times in the America East.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.UMBC senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday at the annual awards reception on the University of Hartford campus.

Cassidy becomes the first Retriever ever to earn all-conference honors three times during UMBC’s seven years in the America East, as she was tabbed to the first team in 2008 and the second team in 2009.

Cassidy leads the Retrievers with 13.1 points per game this season, and she has posted career bests with 134 rebounds (4.6 rpg) and 62 assists. Her 68 three-pointers are tied for the sixth-best single-season total in UMBC history, giving her three of the top 10 spots on the list.

The senior has put together one of the best four-year careers in program history, as she holds UMBC’s career records for 3-pointers (246), 3-point attempts (760) and games played (118). In addition, she ranks among UMBC’s all-time leaders in many other categories, with school Division I records for points (1,609), free throws (343) and field goals attempted (1,425). In addition, her 13.6 ppg career scoring average and .789 free throw percentage rank third, and she is the fourth Retriever ever to drain 500 field goals.

Cassidy also excels in the classroom, boasting a 3.35 grade-point average as a sociology/new media and communications double major. She also earned All-Academic team honors as a sophomore in 2008.

Hartford center Diana Delva was named the America East Player of the Year, while her teammate, forward Erica Beverly, was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Boston University guard Chantell Alford was a unanimous selection for Rookie of the Year, and Hartford head coach Jennifer Rizzotti earned Coach of the Year honors.

The Retrievers (13-16, 7-9 AE) finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the America East standings – their highest finish ever – but earned the sixth seed in this weekend’s America East Championship by virtue of tiebreakers. They will face No. 3 Boston University (15-13, 11-5 AE) on Friday at 2:15 p.m. at Hartford’s chase Arena.
