Retrievers Take on Cross-Town Rival Towson Tuesday Evening

BALTIMORE--The UMBC women's basketball team (1-2) continues its three-game road swing on Tuesday when it travels around the Beltway to take on cross-town rival Towson (2-1) at 7 p.m. at the Towson Center.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is coming off a 77-55 loss at Saint Joseph’s in its first road game of the year. Sophomore guard Katie Brooks finished one rebound shy of a double-double, as she recorded 12 points and nine boards. Senior guard Carlee Cassidy and sophomore forward Erin Brown also scored 12 points for the Retrievers. Cassidy needs just seven more points to join UMBC’s all-time top five scoring leaders, as she currently ranks sixth with 1,267 points. She and sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski rank second and third, respectively for career free throw percentage in Retriever history.
TIGER UPDATE: Towson is 2-1 on the season after a pair of wins over the weekend in the Preseason WNIT consolation bracket. Senior guard Shanae Baker-Brice led the Tigers with 21 points, while junior forward Jessica Haywood added 18. Baker-Brice leads Towson with 21.0 ppg on the season. She was selected to the preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team, while senior forward Katrina Wheeler was named a preseason honorable mention. The Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the CAA preseason poll.
Who’s Up Next: The Retrievers conclude their three-game road trip when they take on Bucknell on Sunday. UMBC is 1-4 all-time against the Bison, including 0-2 in Lewisburg, but the teams have not met since 1998.
Inside the Series: Tuesday's game marks the 44th all-time meeting between UMBC and Towson - UMBC’s oldest and longest-standing rivalry - and the Tigers hold a 31-12 series advantage. The first meeting occurred on March 4, 1969, a 37-36 victory for the visiting Tigers. UMBC is 4-16 all-time on the Tigers’ home court.
In the teams’ last meeting, Dec. 6, 2008, at the RAC Arena, the Retrievers won a thriller, 69-68, giving the Tigers their first loss of the season. UMBC guard Carlee Cassidy scored a game-high 23 points, while guard Michelle Kurowski poured in 22 and forward Erin Brown posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Towson guard Omara Parker led four Tigers in double figures with 15 points, while forward Katrina Wheeler posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
