Women’s Basketball Falls at Saint Joseph’s, 77-55

    Katie Brooks finished just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

    PHILADELPHIA—Four Retrievers scored in double figures, but the UMBC women’s basketball team (1-2) dropped its first road game of the season, 77-55, to Saint Joseph’s (1-2) Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena.

     

    The Retrievers made four of their first five shots of the game and led, 8-1, after 3:40 of action, but the Hawks scored 11 of the next 13 points to go on top, 12-10, at the 13:02 mark. The Retrievers tied it twice over the next 3:09, but a three-pointer by Ashley Prim gave the Hawks the lead for good with 9:33 left in the half.

     

    After Saint Joseph’s opened a nine-point lead, 32-23, at the 2:35 mark, UMBC used an 8-2 run to close the gap to 34-31 at halftime.

     

    The Hawks pulled away early in the second period, opening the half with a 14-4 run over the first six minutes to lead, 48-35, and the Retrievers could not get within single digits the rest of the way.

     

    UMBC shot just 26.7 percent (8-for-30) in the second half, while St. Joseph’s connected on 51.5 percent of its shots (17-for-33).

     

    UMBC sophomore guard Katie Brooks (Maryville, Tenn./Heritage) finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and sophomore forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) also tallied 12 points, while sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) added 11.

     

    St. Joseph’s forward Ashley Logue posted a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while guard Mariame Djouara scored a game-high 18 points and Brittany Ford added 15.

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24, when they take on cross-town rival Towson.
