Kurowski Garners First America East Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Award

11/16/2009

Michelle Kurowski averaged a double-double in two games this weekend.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) earned the season’s first America East Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award, the conference announced Monday.

Kurowski averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games last week, shooting 56 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. She was named America East Player of the Game for both contests.

She scored a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds against Virginia, leading the Retrievers in a tight game against the nation’s 14th-ranked team on Friday night at the RAC. She tallied half of UMBC’s 34 points in the first half as the Retrievers and Cavaliers were tied at intermission.

Kurowski then posted her second career double-double in UMBC’s 102-65 victory over in-state rival UMES on Sunday, recording a game-high 22 points to go along with career highs in rebounds (14) and assists (7) to finish just three helpers shy of a triple-double. Seven of her 14 rebounds were on the offensive glass, and she also drained a career-best four three-pointers in the game.

The Long Island native ranks second all-time at UMBC with a career .833 free throw percentage.

This is Kurowski’s first career Player of the Week award after earning Rookie of the Week honors four times last season. She is the first Retriever to garner the honor since teammate Carlee Cassidy on Dec. 8, 2008 (Week 4).

Kurowski and the Retrievers return to action on Saturday, when they hit the road for the first time this season to take on St. Joseph’s at 2 p.m.
