Womenís Basketball Falls to Hartford, 72-43
The Hawks took a 9-2 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half, but a 7-0 UMBC run that included four points by junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) tied the score at 9-9 with 10:28 left.
The game remained close for the next five minutes, as Hartford led by just three, 19-16, with 5:36 to play, but the visitors ended the half on a 10-1 run, sparked by five points from guard Ilicia Mathis, to take a 29-17 advantage into the locker room.
The second half was a different story, as the Hawks made six of their first nine shots and led, 56-28, with 10:06 to play, and the Retrievers never got closer than 24 points in the final 10 minutes.
Freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was the only Retriever in double figures with 10 points, while freshman forward Erin Brown (
Cassidy saw her 31-game double-digit scoring streak, which dated to Feb. 9, 2008, come to an end, as she was held to just four points in the game.
Mathis earned her teamís Player of the Game nod with a game-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds.
UMBC shot a season-low 24.1 percent (14-for-58) from the floor, including 15.4 percent (4-for-26) in the first half.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they host America East rival Stony Brook at 7 p.m. The contest will be UMBCís Pink Zone game, as the team, in conjunction with the Womenís Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) will join more than 1,500 schools across the country to help raise breast cancer awareness. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
