UMBC Women’s Basketball to Help Raise Breast Cancer Awareness Saturday with WBCA Pink Zone Initiative
BALTIMORE—The UMBC women’s basketball team will take part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative to help raise breast cancer awareness on Saturday, Feb. 21. All proceeds from the Retrievers’ 7 p.m. game against America East rival Stony Brook will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as “Think Pink,” in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities. That season, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching more than 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.
This year more than 1,500 schools and organizations will be participating in the Pink Zone event during the week of February 13-22.
The Retrievers will wear special pink uniforms for Saturday’s game, and the first 1,000 fans will receive free pink T-shirts. In addition, the teams will take part in a ceremonial tip-off with a special pink basketball, and head coach Phil Stern will make a donation for every three-pointer made by the Retrievers in the game.
Other Pink Zone activities include a pink bake sale run by the UMBC women’s soccer team and a sale of pink ribbon pins by the UMBC volleyball team.
The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation, is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Since its launch on Dec. 3, 2007, the Fund has raised over $700,000.
