STONY BROOK, N.Y.—The UMBC women’s basketball team (12-9, 4-4 AEC) dropped its seventh straight road game Saturday afternoon, falling to America East rival Stony Brook (4-15, 2-5 AEC) by a score of 78-62 at Pritchard Gymnasium.

Freshman forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) scored nine of the Retrievers’ first 11 points as the visitors built a 25-18 lead with 10:15 to play in the first half. But a 10-2 Stony Brook run over the next three minutes tied the game at 27-27, and after a jumper by UMBC freshman center Topé Obajolu (Randallstown, Md./Archbishop Carroll), the Seawolves closed the period with a 16-2 spurt to lead, 43-31, at halftime. The Retrievers’ only points in the final seven minutes came on a pair of free throws by Brown, as they missed 11 straight shots to end the half.

Junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) scored eight of UMBC’s first 10 points of the second period, as the Retrievers trimmed their deficit to six points, 47-41, with 15:49 to play. But a 14-3 Stony Brook run over the next four minutes put the Seawolves a game-high 17-point lead, 61-44, and UMBC could never get closer than nine points for the rest of the game.

Brown scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and was named UMBC’s America East Player of the Game. Cassidy was the only other Retriever in double figures, as she tallied a team-best 20 points. Sophomore forward Meghan Colabella (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Retrievers on the boards, while sophomore guard Michele Brokans dished out seven assists.

Stony Brook forward Kirsten Jeter earned her team’s America East Player of the Game honors after scoring a game-high 24 points and adding seven rebounds and six steals. Guard Misha Horsey tallied 14 points to go along with seven helpers, while Crystal Rushin posted 11 rebounds.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 8, when they travel to America East rival New Hampshire.
