Carlee Cassidy posted her fourth 30-point effort of the season.

BOSTON—UMBC junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) tied her career high with 33 points, but it was not enough as the Retrievers’ women’s basketball team (12-8, 4-3 AEC) fell short in an 84-57 loss to America East rival Boston University (13-6, 7-0 AEC) Wednesday evening at Case Gym.

Cassidy, who scored the Retrievers’ first 14 points of the game, posted her fourth 30-point performance of the season en route to America East Player of the Game honors. She also matched her career best with six three-pointers.

With the score tied at 10-10 at the 15:49 mark, the Terriers took control of the game, scoring 39 of the final 50 points of the period to lead 84-57 at halftime. The hosts shot 50 percent in the opening stanza while holding the Retrievers to just 19.4 percent from the field.

UMBC came out stronger in the second half, shooting 65.2 percent in the period, and used a 15-4 run to cut its deficit to 16 points, 61-45, with 9:20 remaining. But the Retrievers were held scoreless for the next five minutes as Boston U. went on a 14-0 spurt to run its lead to a game-high 30 points, 75-45.

Cassidy, sophomore forward Meghan Colabella (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) combined to score all 36 of the Retrievers’ second-half points. Colabella finished with 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Boston U. forward Jesyka Burks-Wiley led four Terriers in double figures with 21 points. Guard Amarachi Umez-Eronini added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while point guard Christine Kinneary chipped in 13 points, eight assists and eight boards en route to America East Player of the Game honors.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to America East rival Stony Brook.
