Erin Brown Tabbed America East Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

1/26/2009

Erin Brown earned her second America East Rookie of the Week award this season.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC freshman forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was named America East Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 25, the conference announced Monday. It marks Brown’s second award this season.

Brown averaged 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 69.6 percent from the field in two conference wins last week, and she was named America East Player of the Game in both contests.

Brown scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting against Albany on Wednesday, then posted her fourth double-double of the season against Binghamton on Saturday with 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Brown is the third-leading scorer for UMBC this year at 9.7 ppg, and she is the third-leading freshman scorer in the conference, as well as the top-rebounding rookie in the America East this season with 5.6 rpg. She also ranks second in the league with a .516 field goal percentage.

UMBC freshmen have won seven of 11 Rookie of the Week awards this season, and nine of the last 13 dating to last season. Katie Brooks (2), Michelle Kurowski (3) and Brown (1) combined to win six in a row between Weeks 2-7, while forward Meghan Colabella was selected in each of the last two weeks of the 2007-08 campaign.

The last time one team has dominated the Rookie of the Week award was in 2006-07 when Vermont’s Courtnay Pilypaitis, May Kotsopoulos and Sofia Iwobi took home 10 top rookie awards, including nine of 10 from Nov. 19, 2006-Jan. 22, 2007.

Brown and the Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28, when they take on first-place Boston University at 7 p.m. at the Terriers’ Case Gym.
