Retrievers Fall to Louisiana Tech, 83-62, at Cavalier Classic

The first half featured eight lead changes in the first 12 minutes of action, but a jumper by Louisiana Tech guard Whitney Jones at the 7:40 mark put the Lady Techsters ahead for good, 25-24. Louisiana Tech led by as many as six points, 35-29, with 2:34 remaining, but back-to-back three-pointers by Cassidy to end the half sent the Retrievers to the locker room down by just three, 39-36.
But the second period was a different story, as UMBC could not find its rhythm, making just 10 of 35 field goal attempts (28.6 percent), while the Lady Techsters were hot, shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Leading by five points at the 14:13 mark, Louisiana Tech went on a 15-4 run to take control of the game, 66-50, with 10 minutes remaining. The Lady Techsters extended their lead to a game-high 24 points at 81-57 with two minutes to play.
Freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was the fourth Retriever in double figures with 10 points, while sophomore guard Michele Brokans (
Jones led four Lady Techsters in double figures with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added eight rebounds, while forward Adrienne Johnson scored 20 points. Forward Shanavia Dowdell posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Retrievers will take on the loser of the Rider/Virginia game in Monday’s consolation game of the Marriott Cavalier Classic. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
