HARRISONBURG, Va.—The UMBC women’s basketball team (7-3) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Thursday evening with a 104-63 loss to a hot-shooting James Madison team (4-4) at the JMU Convocation Center.

The Dukes shot 50 percent in the game with 11 three-pointers. Guard Dawn Evans, the second-leading scorer in the nation, led the way with 26 points on 8-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from long distance, while Lauren Jimenez posted 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

UMBC junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill), the nation’s third-leading scorer, notched 22 points to lead the Retrievers.

James Madison made seven of its first 10 field goals en route to an early 16-3 lead before back-to-back triples by Cassidy and guard Michele Brokans (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) cut the Retrievers’ deficit to seven points at 16-9 at the 14:54 mark.

But that was the closest UMBC would get for the rest of the game, as the Dukes opened a 24-point advantage, 55-31, at halftime.

Cassidy and freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) combined to score 23 of the Retrievers’ first 25 points in the second half. Kurowski finished with 13 points in the game, with 12 coming in the second period.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 21, when they host cross-town rival Loyola at 2 p.m. at the RAC Arena, UMBC’s final home game before the new year.
