Retrievers Sweep Weekly Women’s Basketball Awards
Carlee Cassidy has won four America East Player of the Week awards in her career.
Michelle Kurowski earned her first America East Rookie of the Week honor.
This marks Cassidy’s fourth career Player of the Week nod, as she earned the honor three times during the 2007-08 campaign. She is the only player to win the accolade since Kristin Drabyn on Jan. 1, 2007. It is the first weekly award for Kurowski.
Cassidy led the Retrievers to a pair of victories last week with a team-best 27.5 points per game while shooting 48.6 percent from the floor (17-for-35), including 41.2 percent from three-point range (7-for-17) and 82.4 percent from the foul line (14-for-17). She has scored at least 20 points in seven of UMBC’s eight games this season and leads the America East with 23.9 ppg.
Cassidy scored a career-high 32 points on 10-of-21 shooting and 8-of-9 from the foul line with four three-pointers in UMBC’s 85-77 victory over Navy on Dec. 3, and she was named the America East Co-Player of the Game. It was her second 30-point performance of the season. She again led the Retrievers in scoring in their thrilling 69-68 win over
Kurowski averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game last week. She shot 54.5 percent from the field (18-for-33) and 92.3 percent from the charity stripe (12-for-13) while sinking four three-pointers. She ranks second in the America East with 17.1 ppg on the season.
Kurowski tallied a career-high 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting and drained all six free throws in UMBC’s victory over Navy was named the America East Co-Player of the Game. She scored 20 points in the first half alone and amassed four rebounds and three steals in the contest. She then posted 22 points in the Retrievers’ win over
UMBC freshmen have won three straight America East Rookie of the Week awards and five of the last six dating to last season, as guard Katie Brooks garnered the honor in each of the last two weeks and forward Meghan Colabella was selected in each of the last two weeks of the 2007-08 campaign.
