Women's Basketball Concludes Homestand, Hosts Coppin State Monday Evening
BALTIMORE--The UMBC women's basketball team (6-2) goes for its fifth straight victory Monday evening when it hosts cross-town rival Coppin State (0-6) at 7 p.m. at the RAC Arena. Watch the action live at UMBCRetrievers.tv.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC sits atop the America East at 6-2 on the season - matching the best start in the programís Division I history - after Saturdayís thrilling 69-68 victory over Towson. Junior guard Carlee Cassidy scored a game-high 23 points and has tallied at least 20 points in seven of the Retrieversí eight contests this season. Freshman guard Michelle Kurowski followed up her 30-point performance against Navy with 22 points against the Tigers, while freshman forward Erin Brown posted her second double-double in three games with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cassidy leads the America East and ranks seventh in the nation with 23.9 ppg.
EAGLE UPDATE: Coppin State is 0-6 on the season after falling at Wake Forest, 74-53. Forward Danielle Anders leads the Eagles with 11.7 ppg, the only player averaging double figures in scoring. Center Whitney Cunningham is tops on the team with 7.0 rpg. The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions were picked to finish fourth in the MEAC preseason poll, while Anders and Cunningham were both tabbed to the Preseason All-MEAC Team.
Whoís Up Next: The Retrievers will take a 10-day break for final exams before returning to action on Thursday, Dec. 18, when they head to James Madison. UMBC has never defeated the Dukes in five tries, including last seasonís 74-61 loss at the RAC Arena. The Retrievers are 0-3 all-time in Harrisonburg, Va.
Inside the Series...
Tonightís game marks the 18th all-time meeting between UMBC and Coppin State, and the Retrievers hold a 9-8 series advantage. The first meeting occurred in 1972 and resulted in a UMBC win. The Retrievers won the first seven match-ups between the two teams before the Eagles won, 68-59, on Jan. 7, 1988. Coppin State has won the last six meetings and eight of the last 10 since 1988. The Eagles are 1-6 all-time at the RAC Arena, with the only win coming in 2006.
Last season, the Eagles defeated the Retrievers, 75-43, at the Coppin Center. UMBC committed 25 turnovers and shot just 23 percent in the loss. Coppin State broke the game open with an 18-0 run midway through the first half. Carlee Cassidy led the Retrievers with 18 points, while Shalamar Oakley led all scorers with 26 points to go along with five assists and six steals.
