Katie Brooks Repeats as America East Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

Brooks was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Iona Thanksgiving Classic after averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists and shooting 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the floor in UMBC’s two tournament wins.

Then in the Retrievers’ 92-70 win over UMES a day later, Brooks finished just shy of a triple-double with 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. The nine helpers were the most by a Retriever since January 2007.
For the season, Brooks is averaging 15.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the field. She ranks in the top five in the conference in scoring, assists and field goal percentage.
UMBC freshmen have won four of the last five America East Rookie of the Week awards dating to last season, as forward Meghan Colabella garnered the honor in each of the last two weeks of the 2007-08 campaign. Brooks and Colabella are the only Retrievers to win the award more than once.
Brooks and the Retrievers (4-2) return to action this week when they open a three-game homestand with in-state rival Navy on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised regionally on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).
