Brooks Named MOP of Iona Thanksgiving Classic; Cassidy, Kurowski Named to All-Tournament Team

Katie Brooks averaged 18.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 5.0 apg at the Iona Thanskgiving Classic.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—UMBC freshman guard Katie Brooks (Maryville, Tenn./Heritage) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Iona Thanksgiving Classic, while junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Brooks averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists and shot 56.5 percent (13-for-23) in the tournament’s two games. In UMBC’s 81-69 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday, she scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line. Then in Sunday’s 92-70 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore, Brooks finished just shy of a triple-double with 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. The nine helpers were the most by a Retriever since January 2007.

Cassidy scored a tournament-high 19.5 points per game on 44.4 percent shooting (12-for-27) and added 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She tallied 21 points against Western Michigan, with all of her offensive output coming in the second half. She added 18 points and drained four of seven three-pointers the next day against UMES.

Kurowski posted 16.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from the floor. She scored eight of the Retrievers’ first 18 points against Western Michigan and finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in the game. Then she tallied 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with five rebounds and three assists against UMES.

The Retriever trio was joined on the all-tournament team by Thazina Cook and Kristina Ford of Iona, Tiera DeLaHoussaye and Miame Giden of Western Michigan and Kanzes Battin of UMES.

UMBC went 2-0 at the Iona Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 29-30, the only squad in the four-team field with two wins.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when they host Navy at 4:30 p.m., opening a three-game homestand at the RAC Arena.
