Erin Brown posted the Retrievers' first double-double since February 2007 with 22 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—UMBC freshman forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) posted career highs with 22 points and 11 rebounds and the Retrievers (4-2) shot 55 percent from the floor in a 92-70 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-4) on the second day of the Iona Thanksgiving Classic.

Brown’s double-double was the first by a Retriever since Sharri Rohde posted 27 points and 10 rebounds on Feb. 20, 2007, and her 11 rebounds are the most in a game by a UMBC player this season.

Brown shot 9-for-11 from the floor, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, and led four Retrievers in double figures, as freshman guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored 19 points, junior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) tallied 18 and freshman guard Katie Brooks (Maryville, Tenn./Heritage) added 14.

Brooks was just shy of a triple-double with seven rebounds and a game-high nine assists, the most by a Retriever since Brittnie Hughes dished out nine helpers at New Hampshire on Jan. 20, 2007. UMBC had 25 assists in the game, the most since recording 26 on Dec. 2, 2006, at Fairleigh Dickinson.

UMBC shot an eye-popping 70 percent (21-for-30) from the floor in the first half, including a perfect 7-for-7 from three-point range. Brown led all scorers with 16 points in the period on a flawless 7-for-7 shooting.

The game was tied, 8-8, at the 17:42 mark before the Retrievers went on a 13-0 run over the next 4:40 to take a 21-8 lead. Brown scored seven points during that stretch. The Hawks cut their deficit to eight points with 8:30 remaining, but a 23-3 UMBC spurt gave the Retrievers a commanding 28-point advantage, 48-20, with 1:47 to go before halftime. UMBC led, 51-27, at intermission.

The Retrievers made just four of their first 18 field goal attempts in the second half as the Hawks whittled away at the lead, cutting it to 15 points, 71-56, at the 9:02 mark. But UMBC drained six of their next eight shots to regain a 23-point advantage, 89-66, with 2:20 to play.

A free throw by freshman guard Jasmine Elum (Philadelphia, Pa./Bodine) with 1:49 remaining was UMBC’s 90th point of the game, marking the first time the Retrievers reached the 90-point plateau since a 91-89 overtime victory over Charleston Southern on Jan. 16, 1993. In addition, the 92 points are the most UMBC has scored in a game since Jan. 12, 1991, a 94-61 win over Salisbury State.

The Retrievers hit a season-high 33 field goals and shot 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from three point range. Cassidy was 4-for-7 from long distance.

Forward Josephine McIane led the Hawks with 16 points, while forward Tiffany Reid and Kanzes Battin posted 13 points apiece and guard Amber Cook added 12. UMES shot just 29.6 percent from the floor (21-for-71).

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 4:30 p.m. when they host in-state rival Navy in the first game of a three-game homestand.
