Katie Rokus Named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at George Washington
“I am very thankful to Katie for her years of loyalty to UMBC and to me personally,” Stern said. “This is a well-deserved move in her career, and we all wish her nothing but the best.”
Rokus helped the Retrievers to unprecedented success on and off the court during her tenure, highlighted by the program’s first America East Conference title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2007. The previous year, UMBC posted its first winning season in 12 years.
In addition, under Rokus’ supervision, the women’s basketball squad won a pair of Retriever Cups (2006, 2008), an award which is presented annually to the top UMBC team based on GPA, community outreach, Athletes Supporting Athletes and attendance at Sunday lectures. UMBC also boasted the highest team grade-point average among America East women’s basketball members in 2006.
Rokus, who was originally recruited by Stern to play at USC Aiken, was a two-time team captain during her four-year career with the Lady Pacers from 1999-2003. The native of
