Colabella Repeats as America East Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

3/10/2008

Meghan Colabella has averaged 11.5 ppg in the last six contests.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC freshman forward Meghan Colabella (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) earned her third America East Rookie of the Week award and her second in as many weeks after her outstanding play during the final week of the season, the conference announced Monday.

Colabella averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in two games last week. She scored a career-high 19 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting effort against Boston University on Wednesday, including 3-for-3 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. She added a career-best four steals to go along with six rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes.

Then against Hartford on Saturday, Colabella played all 40 minutes for the first time in her career, contributing nine points and four rebounds while making 5-of-6 free throw attempts.

Colabella is averaging 11.5 ppg and shooting 57.5 percent in her last six games.

In addition to last week’s honor, Colabella previously earned Rookie of the Week recognition on Jan. 14, and she is the only Retriever since UMBC joined the America East to receive the award more than once. The last Retriever to win the award was Amanda Robinson in March 2005. Colabella is also one of just three players to earn Rookie of the Week three times this season, joining Maine’s Tanna Ross and New Hampshire’s Denise Beliveau.

Colabella and the Retrievers head to West Hartford, Conn., for the America East Championships this weekend. Seventh-seeded UMBC will face No. 3 Boston University in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2 p.m.
