Carlee Cassidy scored 21 points against Richmond.

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—In its first game in nine days, the UMBC women’s basketball team (4-8) fell to Richmond (7-5) by a score of 64-51 Friday afternoon on the first day of the Terrapin Classic at Comcast Center. Sophomore guard Carlee Cassidy scored 21 points in the loss.

The score was knotted, 23-23, the eighth tie in the first 13:45 of play, but Richmond took control of the game with an 11-2 run to close the half with a 34-25 lead.

The Retrievers, who shot 47.8 percent in the first half, made 10 of their first 15 field goal attempts but just one of eight during the final 7:39 of the period.

The Spiders pulled down 20 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, including 11 on the offensive end of the floor, accounting for 11 second-chance points.

UMBC’s cold streak continued into the second half, as the Retrievers made just two of their first 12 attempts, and Richmond jumped out to an 18-point lead, 52-34, with 7:23 remaining.  

The Retrievers put together a 14-5 run to trim the deficit to 10 points, 57-47, with 2:01 left in the game, but they could not complete the comeback.

Cassidy led the Retrievers with 21 points, while senior guard Morgan Hatten contributed 12 points to go along with seven rebounds. Freshman forward Meghan Colabella also grabbed a career-high seven boards.

Richmond forward Christina Campion led all scorers with 24 points and added eight rebounds. She went 8-for-12 from the floor, including 6-for-7 from 3-point range. Forward Katie Holzer posted a game-high 12 boards.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday, Dec. 30, when they take on No. 5 Maryland on the final day of the Terrapin Classic.
