BALTIMORE—UMBC’s all-time “iron woman” and two-time America East all-conference selection Sharri Rohde has been hired as an assistant coach for the Retrievers, UMBC head coach Phil Stern announced today.
“I’m very excited to be part of the staff and I look forward to learning a lot and seeing things from a coaching viewpoint,” Rohde said. “I’m excited to be coaching alongside the coaches I played for.”
Rohde replaces former assistant Kelley Gibson, who left UMBC after one year to take become an assistant coach at America East rival
Just the third player in school history to score 1,000 points and record 500 rebounds and 300 assists, Rohde ranks among UMBC’s all-time leaders in almost every category, including points (7th, 1,225), field goals (7th, 458), field goal percentage (3rd, .475), free throws (7th, 243), free throw percentage (8th, .711), assists (6th, 336), blocks (6th, 86), steals (12th, 152) and rebounds (12th, 631).
Rohde is also the school’s all-time record-holder for games played (117), games started (117) and minutes played (3,970), as she never missed a start in her four-year career.
A three-time team co-captain, Rohde led the Retrievers to their first-ever America East title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2007, and she was named to the America East All-Championship Team.
Rohde was selected to the America East all-conference second team in 2006 and 2007 and was an all-defensive team pick as a senior, as well.
After an outstanding junior year, when she shot at a .543 clip, the third-best single-season field-goal percentage in school history, Rohde concluded her career in superb fashion, averaging 13.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals as a senior. Her 442 points are the seventh-most ever scored by a Retriever in a single season, and she played in a school-record 1,168 minutes. She also was the only player to rank in the top 10 in the America East in scoring, rebounding and assists.
“Sharri has been the face of our program for four years,” Stern said. “I’m delighted that she will start her coaching career with us as she has tremendous knowledge of our system. Sharri will be able to impart her outstanding work ethic on our young players and help them understand what it takes to compete in the America East.”
