Women’s Basketball Adds Guard Chelsea Barker to Complete 2007-08 Roster

8/29/2007

Head Coach Phil Stern has added six new players to his defending America East Championship squad.

Baltimore-UMBC head women’s basketball coach Phil Stern announced today that Maine high school standout Chelsea Barker will join the Retrievers as a freshman for the 2007-08 season.

Barker, a 5-foot-8 guard from Waterville, Maine, averaged 20.1 points per game as a senior at Messalonskee High School, leading the Eagles to a 20-2 record and the Eastern Maine finals. She was named KVAC Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring, and she scored 1,000 points in her high school career. Barker was also a finalist for Miss Maine Basketball 2007.

Chelsea is a versatile guard who will add depth to our back court,” Stern said.

Barker also played softball at Messalonskee, and her twin sister, Amanda, will be a freshman on the softball team at Maine Maritime Academy this spring.

Barker is the sixth member of the Retrievers’ 2007 recruiting class. She joins classmates Michele Brokans, Meghan Colabella, Jenny Lidgren and Chrissy Robinson, as well as junior college standout Chantay Frazier.
