UMBC Women’s Basketball Falls at Albany, 70-51
Amanda Robinson scored UMBC's final nine points and finished with a game-high 15.
The Great Danes jumped out to a 16-5 lead after eight minutes of action, shooting 58.3 percent (7-for-12) during the span, while the Retrievers managed just two of 13 field goal attempts (15.4 percent).
UMBC scored nine of the next 14 points to close the gap to seven with 3:19 left to play, but Albany closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 29-16 lead at halftime.
The Great Danes shot 46.2 percent in the first half, compared to UMBC’s 21.2 percent from the floor. The 16 points were the lowest the Retrievers have scored in a half this season.
UMBC pulled to within 10 points, 33-23, at the 16:14 mark of the second period, but 11 minutes later Albany had gone ahead by 25, 62-37, with 10 points from Gia Sanders.
A 14-6 UMBC run made it 68-51 with 27 seconds left, and Albany’s Sarah Hayes hit a jumper with 11 seconds to go for the 70-51 victory. Robinson scored UMBC’s final nine points of the game.
Robinson finished with a game-high 15 points, while senior forward Sharri Rohde scored 13 and senior point guard Brittnie Hughes added 10. Junior guard Morgan Hatten and senior forward Heather Luttrell had four steals apiece.
Kristin Higy led the Great Danes with 14 points, while Mikus posted a game-high 14 rebounds. McGee and Amanda Ward each had 11 points for
The Great Danes shot 51.9 percent in the game and went 8-for-23 (34.8 percent) from long distance. UMBC shot 31.7 percent from the floor.
