Retrievers Reach .500 Mark with 66-43 Victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at UTPA Battle at the Border Holiday Tournament
Kristin Drabyn scored a career-high 18 points in the victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Edinburg, Texas-The UMBC womenís basketball team (6-6) shot a season-high 50 percent from the field en route to a 66-43 rout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-7) Thursday evening in the first game of the University of Texas-Pan American Battle at the Border Holiday Tournament. With the victory, the Retrievers reach the .500 mark for the first time this season, evening their record at 6-6, and have won back-to-back games for the first time this year, as well.
Senior forward Sharri Rohde recorded her third double-double of the season and the fifth of her career with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She also added seven assists. Junior guard Kristin Drabyn set a new career best with 18 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the floor, including 3-for-8 from three-point range.
The Retrievers scored the first seven points of the game before the Islandersí Kirbria Lewis registered a steal and scored on the fast break five minutes into the game.
Up by two points, 15-13, with 9:19 to play in the first half, UMBC held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi without a field goal for the remainder of the period. The Islanders recorded five free throws during that time, while the Retrievers opened a 27-18 lead, their second-largest halftime advantage of the season.
The Retrievers shot 50 percent (12-for-24) in the first half while holding the Islanders to just 17.9 percent (5-for-28) from the floor, the second-lowest shooting percentage in a half by a UMBC opponent.
Drabyn scored nine of the Retrieversí first 11 points of the second half on two three-pointers, a layup and a free throw. The Islanders never got closer than six points in the period, 32-26 with 14:04 to play. UMBC scored 15 straight points over the next four and a half minutes to take a commanding 47-26 lead at the 9:36 mark.
The Retrievers took a game-high 26-point lead, 66-40, on a fast-break layup by junior center Charese Baldwin, the first points of the transferís career in her first game in a UMBC uniform. Lewis hit a three-pointer for the Islanders with 52 seconds remaining for the 66-43 final score.

In addition to Rohde and Drabyn, senior point guard Brittnie Hughes also reached double digits in scoring with 13 points and tied a season high with eight assists.
The Islandersí 43 points are the least scored against UMBC this season and mark the second time a Retriever opponent has scored less than 50 in a game. Nicole Duncan led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 11 points, while Elisa Beagle scored 10. Jillianne Duffey led the team with nine rebounds.
