WOMEN'S HOOPS UPSETS NEC LEADER ST. FRANCIS (PA), 71-65; JESSIE BROWN NETS CAREER-HIGH 24 POINTS
UMBC junior guard scored a career-high 24 points in UMBC's victory over St. Francis (PA).
Baltimore, MD - -- The host UMBC Retrievers erased a 61-52 deficit with 4:17 remaining and defeated Northeast Conference leader St. Francis (PA), 71-65, Saturday evening at the UMBC RAC Arena.UMBC (9-11, 5-6 NEC) junior guard Jessie Brown scored seven of her career-high 24 points over the final 1:40 of the contest, including the go-ahead basket, a three-point play off a fast break lay-up, which gave the Retrievers a 64-63 lead. Freshman Christine Catalanotto followed with a three-point field goal from the left wing with forty-seven seconds remaining to put UMBC up 67-63. Brown calmly converted all four of her free throw attempts to ice the game in the closing seconds.The teams went back and forth early in the second half following a 33-33 halftime deadlock. UMBC led 43-42 with 13:22 remaining but the Red Flash (11-9, 9-2 NEC) went on a 19-9 run to grab their second nine point lead of the game at 61-52.Brown, who connected on 7-for-12 from the field and 8-for-9 from the line, scored 16 points in the second half. Brown played all 40 minutes and added 3 steals. Senior forward Sheila Johnson added 14 points and senior forward Millette Green and junior forward Yinka Bada were also in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.St. Francis (PA), who has now dropped two straight, were led by sophomore forward Carlin Chesick, who scored 23 points and added 6 rebounds. Guard Karen Hewitt (15) and center Beth Swink (10) were also in double-figures.UMBC shot forty-six percent from the floor (26-for-57) and were 15-for-21 (71 percent) from the line. St. Francis (PA) hit fifty-two percent (26-for-50) from the floor and were 10-for-13 (77 percent) from the line.
