Boston, Mass. – UMBC women’s basketball junior Brittnie Hughes (Roanoke, Va./Northside) was named America East Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday for the week ending Dec. 4, 2005.  Hughes last week led UMBC to back-to-back wins with 18.5 points per game (ppg) and 6.5 assists per game (apg) in the two contests.

Hughes on the season is shooting 52.6 percent from the field and averaging a team-best 15.2 ppg and 5.7 apg.  Hughes ranks second in the America East Conference in points and assists per game.  She leads the America East with seven consecutive double-digit performances dating back to last season.

The Retriever point guard opened the week with a career high of 19 points and nine assists in UMBC’s 68-56 win over American.  Hughes went 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the game, including 6-for-6 in the final three minutes.

In the Retrievers’ home game last Saturday, Hughes scored a team-high 17 points with four assists and four rebounds in UMBC’s 71-51 win over Longwood.  Hughes shot 6-of-9 from the field and made all four free throw attempts as she has converted her last 17 attempts from the charity stripe.

Binghamton’s Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School 47) shared the weekly honor with Hughes while Hartford’s MaryLynne Schaefer (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was named America East Rookie of the Week.  The weekly honors are the first ever such recognition for all three student-athletes.
