Baltimore, Md. – UMBC Women’s Basketball Head Coach Phil Stern has rounded out his staff with the hiring of Lindsey Roche as Assistant Coach for the Retrievers.  Roche is a native of Riva, Md., and recently graduated after a successful four-year career at UNC Asheville.

“Lindsey is a very enthusiastic young coach who will bring energy and a wealth of experience to UMBC,” said Stern.  “She has strong local ties to the area and we are thrilled to have her join our staff.”

Roche’s duties will include being involved in all aspects of recruiting, practice planning, game strategy and the everyday operations of the women’s basketball program.

Roche was a two-year captain and a member of the Big South All-Rookie Team for UNC Asheville where she led the turn around of a program that had not had a winning season in 20-years.  Roche directed the Bulldogs to a plus-16 game improvement and a 19-9 record in 2003-04, becoming the NCAA Most Improved Team that year.

Roche carried the winning mentality into 2004-05 as the Bulldogs strung together back-to-back winning seasons and an 18-12 record.  Considered the team’s best defender and top three-point weapon, Roche finished her career with 142 steals and 77 career three-point baskets.

Roche has spent the last four summers gaining coaching experience, working girls basketball camps at UNC Asheville and Virginia Tech.  She worked two summers for the Maryland recreational basketball league at the Anne Arundel Department of Parks and Recreation.  In addition this past year she attended the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association “So I Want To Be A Coach” seminar in Indianapolis, Ind.

Roche, a 2005 graduate, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management degree with a concentration in Business Administration from UNC Asheville.
