NORTHEASTERN HITS TWO FREE THROWS WITH ONE SECOND TO PLAY IN 49-48 WIN OVER UMBC IN AMERICA EAST WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNEY
The game was tight throughout and there were five lead changes in the final 1:18. Sophomore Sharri Rohde gave UMBC a pair of leads in the final minute, hitting a layup with 55 seconds to play to put the Retrievers ahead, 46-45, and hitting both ends of a one-and-one opportunity from the line to give her team a 48-47 advantage with 15 seconds left. But Pablos drew a foul on UMBC’s Courtney Doughman with one tick remaining and Pablos hit both attempts of a two-shot foul. The Retrievers were unable to get off a shot in the time remaining.
UMBC blistered the nets in the first half, hitting 12 of 17 shots, but they also committed 13 turnovers and could only manage a 26-all tie at the break. For the game, UMBC shot 58.3%, the third highest figure in the tournament’s history. However, the Retrievers committed 19 turnovers and were outpaced badly at the free throw line. NU made 17 of 20 attempts, while UMBC was just 3 of 5.
Sophomore guard Brittnie Hughes led UMBC with 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting, while freshman post Amanda Robinson hit 6 of 9 shots in a 12-point effort.
