SLOW STARTS DIG UMBC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL INTO TWO BIG HOLES, FALL TO NEW HAMPSHIRE, 73-61

Anastasia Goncharova scored a career-high 33 points, fifth on UMBC's all-time single game chart for points scored.

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers women’s basketball team (7-10, 2-6 AE) lost to the University of New Hampshire (8-9, 4-4 AE) in America East Women’s Basketball action on Saturday afternoon at UMBC RAC Arena by a final of 73-61.  The Retrievers were led by Anastasia Goncharova (Moscow, Russia/The Newport School) who tallied a career-high 33 points going 12-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 from three-point range, including a perfect 6-for-6 in the first half.  The Retrievers, however, dug themselves into two holes to start each half allowing the Wildcats to build double-digit leads.

The Retrievers went 0-for-11 and trailed 13-0 to open the game until a Matea Pender trey at 12:33 sparked UMBC on a 7-of-8 shooting stretch, all three-pointers with five by Goncharova as UMBC closed the gap to 22-21 with 4:42.  The Retrievers took their only lead of the game with a jumper just inside the arc by Brittnie Hughes at 2:40, 26-25, but on the ensuing possession Ebony Woods knocked down a three-point basket sending the Wildcats back on top.

New Hampshire never trailed again and held a 31-29 lead at halftime.  The Retrievers in the first half made 10 field goals with nine of those field goals three-point baskets.

In the second half each team traded opening baskets before a 14-0 run by the Wildcats extended their lead to 16 points as the Retrievers were held scoreless for a six minute stretch.  The Retrievers rallied and closed the gap to three at 56-53 on a Goncharova trey but the Wildcats behind back-to-back three-point baskets by Woods opened their advantage back up and took the 12-point win.

The Wildcats, who entered the game with the conferences worst three-point field goal percentage at 26.1 percent and averaged 5.12 treys per game, shot 44.0 percent from outside the arc going 11-of-25.  Woods had a sensation day with a perfect 6-for-6 from field and 5-for-5 from outside the arc.  She led four players in double figures with 19 points.  Kate Dillon finished with 13 points and nine rebounds while Whitney Edwards and Danielle Clark each had 10 points.

Gocharova came one trey away from tying UMBC’s record for most three-point baskets in a game.  That mark is 10 set by Jami Lange in 1999.  The Retrievers dropped 13 treys as a team, coming one three-point basket away from tying the all-time record for team three-pointers in a game at 14, set last year at Northeastern on Jan. 17, 2004. 

UMBC returns to action when they travel to Vermont on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
