RETRIEVERS FALL BEHIND EARLY, UNABLE TO CATCH BACK UP WITH HARTFORD IN 56-39 LOSS

Hartford, Conn. – The UMBC women’s basketball team (5-6, 0-2 America East) lost to Hartford (8-3, 2-0 America East) by a final of 56-39 in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Reich Family Pavilion. UMBC missed from the field on their first eight baskets and shot 28.6 percent from the field as the Hawks 13-1 run to start the game proved too much for UMBC to overcome.
Mogan Hatten hit the Retrievers first shot at the 12:22 mark on a lay-up but Hartford responded with a trey by Liz Stich that sparked 12-2 run and gave the Hawks a 25-5 lead with 7:25 left in the half. Harford went on to take a 38-13 lead at the break after shooting 51.6 percent (16-of-31) in the first stanza.
The Retrievers, who went 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) in the first half, outscored the Hawks 26-18 in the second half, 10 points coming from Sharri Rohde who finished with a UMBC team-high 14 points. Rohde also grabbed five rebounds and created four steals for the Retrievers.
For the game the Retrievers went 14-of-49 from the field, 28.6 percent, compared to 23-of-53, 43.4 percent by Hartford. Leading the Hawks was Ikea Witt with 14 points and Danielle Hood with 11 points.
The Retrievers, who went 0-3 on their three-game road swing, return home to face Boston University on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
