Sharri Rohde finished with a season-high 15 points to lead UMBC.

Towson, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (5-4, 0-0 America East) dropped a 60-47 decision to the Towson Tigers (7-4, 0-0 Colonial Athletic Conference) in non-conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at the Tiger Center.  Towson won the 40^th meeting between the two programs after using a 20-0 run in the middle of the second half to jump out to their big lead.

UMBC shot a season-low from the field at 19-of-56 (33.5 percent) but trailed by just four points at the break, 24-20, mainly behind the effort of Sharri Rohde (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central).  Rohde scored 11 first-half points going 5-of-7 from the field and 1-of-2 from the free throw line. 

In the second half the Retrievers trailed 30-27 with just over 14 minutes to play when Towson went on their 20-0 run that stretch to the 8:00 mark, taking a 50-27 advantage over the Retrievers. 

The Retrievers were unable to recover as Towson went on to take the 17-point victory.  Rohde finished with 15 points and six rebounds for UMBC.  She added five assists and three blocks as well. 

Brittnie Hughes (Roanoke, Va./Northside) ended with eight points and Matea Pender (Sibenik, Croatia/The Croatian National Team) tallied nine rebounds. 

Tierra Jackson recorded her second double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Kelly Robinson finished with 11 point and 11 rebounds for a double-double as well.  LaShay Rose came off the bench and tallied 12 points. 

Towson for the game out rebounded UMBC 49-39, including grabbing 19 offensive boards against the Retrievers.   

The game marked UMBC’s final non-conference game of the year as they begin America East Conference play next week when they travel to Stony Brook on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes:  Towson’s 60-43 win over UMBC is their second straight win in the series after defeating UMBC last year, 54-42…Towson leads the 40-game series with UMBC with an advantage of 29-11…UMBC finishes their non-conference slate at 5-4, their best non-conference finish since going 8-7 in the 1990-91 season, their first year in the East Coast Conference since turning Division-I four years prior…Sharri Rohde finished with a season-high 15 points for UMBC…she was two points away from her career-high of 17 points scored last year against Loyola on Jan. 3…Rohde finished with three blocks as well as her blocks per game average continues to rise…Rohde entered the game seventh in the America East at 0.75 bpg and now has five blocks in the last two games…Matea Pender, after averaging 18.1 ppg through the first seven games, has two points in the last two contests and is 1-for-12 in the last two games from the field…Pender did finish with a season and team-high nine rebounds...UMBC had 39 rebounds in the game, the second time this season they have eclipsed 30-rebounds in a game.
