Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC Women’s Basketball team (2-1) exploded with 50-first half points to go up by 30 at the break, 50-20, over Morgan State (0-2) as the Retrievers downed the Bears by a final of 87-52 on Tuesday night at Hill Top Field House. The Retrievers received 25 points from Matea Pender (Sibenik, Croatia/Croation National Team) as the junior forward tallied 20 in the first half.
After trailing 7-6 with 16 minutes left in the first half UMBC went on a 15-0 run as Heather Luttrell (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) drained two treys and two jumpers for eight of the 15 points. The Retrievers extended that run to 26-4 as Kristin Drabyn (Avon, Ind./Avon) came off the bench to score seven quick points.
The Retrievers placed four players in double-figures including two in the first half as Pender and Luttrell each had 10 points just under the halfway mark of the first stanza.
With 10 points in the second half Brittnie Hughes (Roanoke, Va./Northside) who for the third consecutive game dished out six assists, joined Pender, Luttrell and Drabyn in double figures. Drabyn finished with 10 for her second-consecutive double-digit performance.
All 11 eligible Retrievers tallied points in the game as UMBC shot 55.6 percent from the floor on 30-of-54. The Retrievers went 11-of-25 from three-point range, three away from the school record set last year of 14 treys in a game.
Pender went 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from three-point range.
Markema Hollingsworth finished with 15 points for Morgan State.
UMBC returns to action when they host Navy on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in UMBC RAC Arena.
