WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACH BETH WANDYES RESIGNS
4/30/2004
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Women’s Basketball team announced today that Assistant Coach Beth Wandyes will resign from her coaching position effective June 30, 2004. Wandyes followed current Head Coach Phil Stern from USC Aiken and spent the last two seasons at UMBC as the Retrievers’ top assistant and recruiting coordinator.
“Beth has been an integral part of our program and as sorry as I am to see her leave, family does come first,” said Stern. “We wish her, Ryan and little Kelsie the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.”
Wandyes, a graduate from Bryant College, served four years at her alma mater as an assistant coach before joining Stern’s staff at USC Aiken. After a one-year stint, Wandyes followed Stern to UMBC and was an essential part in the Retrievers’ run to the NEC title game in 2002-03 and the move into the America East Conference in 2003-04.
“I have enjoyed my time at UMBC but at the same token I look forward to moving back to my home state of Rhode Island with our new baby girl and my family,” said Wandyes. “I wish Coach Stern, his staff and the entire program the best of luck.”
During this past season Wandyes gave birth to her and husband Ryan Wandyes’ first child, Kelsie Wandyes.
Wandyes will stay on the Retrievers’ staff until her current contract runs out at the end of June. A search to fill the vacancy will begin immediately.
