RETRIEVERS’ WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO BOSTON U., 59-40
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC women’s basketball team (1-19, 1-10 AE) dropped a 59-40 decision to Boston University (13-7, 8-3 AE) on Wednesday night in UMBC RAC Arena. The Retrievers after falling behind by as many as 17 in the first half cut the lead to three, 39-36, with 9.38 to play in the second stanza but were unable get any closer as a 20-4 run capped off the Terriers win.
The Retrievers opened the game 0-for-8 from the field and fell into an early 22-5 hole before five quick points by Anastasia Goncharova sparked a Retriever 9-1 run to end the first half and pull UMBC within single digits, 23-14, at the break.
The Terriers’ lead slowly dwindled down to three points as Courtney Doughman drained a trey with 9.38 to play in the second period. UMBC missed on their next five possessions as Katie Terhune, who scoreless at that point in the game, awoke knocking down back-to-back treys and sent the lead back to nine at 45-36 with 4:35 in the second half. The Terriers finished strong down the stretch to claim the 59-40 victory.
Adrienne Norris for the Terriers led all scorers with a game-high 16 points and Terhune finished with 10. The Retrievers’ leading scorer was Anasatasia Goncharova with eight points while freshman Sharri Rohde finished with seven points and eight rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals.
The Terriers out rebounded UMBC by a margin of 35-28 as Boston U. shot 39.6 percent form the field on 21-of-53. The Retrievers shot 35.1 percent from the field on 13-of-37.
The Retrievers host fellow Boston, Mass., native Northeastern on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in UMBC RAC Arena.
