Entering her fifth season at UMBC, Lindsey Roche joined the Retrievers’ staff in July 2005, returning to her home state after a successful four-year career for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. A native of Riva, Md., who attended South River High School, Roche has been involved in all aspects of recruiting, practice planning, game strategy and the everyday operations of the women’s basketball program.
Roche was a two-year captain and a member of the 2001-02 Big South All-Rookie Team at UNC Asheville, where she led the revival of a program that had not had a winning season in 20 years. Picked to finish last in the Big South in the 2003-04 preseason poll, Roche directed the Bulldogs to a second-place conference finish, a plus-16 game improvement and a 19-9 record, becoming the NCAA’s most improved team that year after posting the third-largest turnaround in NCAA history.
Roche helped carry the winning mentality into 2004-05, as the Bulldogs posted an 18-12 record and advanced to the Big South finals before falling to NCAA Sweet 16 team Liberty. Considered the team’s best defender and top 3-point weapon, Roche finished her career with 225 assists, 142 steals and 77 career 3-point baskets while averaging 5.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Roche has spent numerous summers gaining coaching experience, working girls’ basketball camps at UNC Asheville, UMBC and Virginia Tech. In addition, she attended the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association “So I Want to Be a Coach” seminar in Indianapolis in 2005.
Roche graduated from UNC Asheville in 2005 with a bachelor of science degree in business management with a concentration in business administration.
