ORONO, Maine—Senior Ashley Fauntleroy (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) was named the America East Outdoor Championship Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second straight year as the UMBC men’s and women’s track and field teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively at the conference championship meet in Orono, Maine last weekend.
The women’s team, led by triple gold medalist Fauntleroy, amassed a total of 96 points, while the men’s team totaled 93.5 points.
For the first time in her career, Fauntleroy claimed the triple crown in the throwing events with first-place finishes in the shot put, hammer throw, and discus throw and was named the Most Outstanding Female Field Performer for her efforts, the second straight year she has been honored.
The senior turned in a mark of 50.22m (164’9”) in the hammer throw on Saturday and won the discus throw with a mark of 44.64m (146’5”), and also led a Retriever sweep in the shot put with a mark of 14.41m (47’3.5”), all ECAC-qualifying marks.
Freshman Rachelle Wright (Fort Washington, Md./Frederick Douglass) and senior Toni Boyd (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) completed the sweep of the shot put, finishing second and third with marks of 13.31m (43’8”) and 13.07m (42’10.75”), respectively.
The Retrievers also saw three athletes in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles as juniors Kierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and Tierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and sophomore Jennifer Kalkstein (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell/St. Francis (Pa.)) finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, with times of 14.50, 14.64 and 14.82.
Kalkstein also finaled in the 400 hurdles, finishing eighth in 1:14.16 and was part of the 4 x 100m relay with Tierra Gregory, and sophomores Tawana Wilson (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) and Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), which finished fourth in 48.44 and the 4 x 400m relay with Tierra Gregory, Wilson, and Kierra Gregory which was eighth in 4:17.23.
Foreman placed in two events for the Retrievers, finishing fourth in the 100 in 12.18 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 25.41, while Wilson was seventh in the 100 in 12.36.
Junior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis (Pa.)) finished fifth in the 5000 with a time of 17:36.79, while freshman Jasmin Batchelor (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) rounded out the top finishers with a fifth-place showing in the high jump with a mark of 1.53m (5’0.25”).
On the men’s side, sophomore Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) recorded the highest finish, taking silver in the decathlon with an IC4A-qualifying total of 6,286 points. On the second day of competition, the sophomore took the top points in both the 110 hurdles and pole vault.
Sophomore Mike Buccheri (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan/Monmouth) finished sixth in the same event with a total of 5,149 points and junior Brian Pendleton (Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech) rounded out the top field performances with a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 14.07m (46’2”).
Sophomores Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Antonio Thomas (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) each finaled in two events on the track side, with Arthur finishing third in the 100 in an IC4A-qualifying 10.85 and fifth in the 200 in 22.04, while Thomas was fourth in the 100 in 10.96 and fourth in the 200 in 21.91.
The duo also teamed with sophomore Mohamed Koroma (Mitchelville, Md./C.H. Flowers/Morgan State) and Pendleton to claim silver in the 4 x 100m relay with an IC4A-qualifying time of 42.02 and Koroma and Thomas paired with junior Jimmy Mildenberger (Severna Park, Md./Chesapeake) and sophomore Marcus Dickerson (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) to finish fifth in the 4 x 400m relay in 3:20.80.
Dickerson also finaled in the 400, finishing eighth in 50.79, while junior Anthony Kelhower (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) was seventh in the 5000 in 15:08.34.
The Retriever men also saw three athletes in the finals of the 110 hurdles, with sophomores Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonogh) and Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) and senior Aaron James (Glen Dale, Md./Duval) finishing fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively with times of 14.56, 14.67, and 14.70.
Pugh also finaled in the 400 hurdles, finishing eighth in 57.34, while sophomore Kenyan Hicks (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West/St. Francis (Pa.)) was fourth in the same event in 54.80.
The Retrievers’ only other top finish came by the 4 x 800m relay of junior Josh Okoniewski (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), freshman Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg), freshman Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) and sophomore Chris Hart (Lancashire, England/St. Mary’s University) which finished third in 7:48.83.
The Retrievers return to competition in two weeks when they travel to Princeton, N.J. for the IC4A/ECAC Championships from May 16-18.
