BOSTON—Senior Ashley Fauntleroy (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer at the America East Championships on Sunday after claiming her second gold medal of the weekend as she won the shot put. Both UMBC track and field teams finished fourth overall, improving from their sixth place finishes one year ago, as the men totaled 93.5 points and the women tied Stony Brook with 72 points.
The men also struck gold on the final day of competition as the 4 x 800-meter relay of junior Josh Okoniewski (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), freshmen Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg) and Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College, and sophomore Chris Hart (Lancashire, England/St. Mary’s University) turned in a winning time of 7:47.97.
Fauntleroy was the big story, however, as she swept the individual titles for the shot put and weight throw for the second straight year. On Friday, the senior threw a career-best ECAC-qualifying mark of 16.82m (55’2.25”) to win the weight throw and then returned to the field on Saturday to win the shot put with a mark of 13.33m (43’8.75”).
Freshman Rachelle Wright (Fort Washington, Md./Frederick Douglass) and senior Toni Boyd (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) also finaled in the shot put as they turned in marks of 12.65m (41’6”) and 12.53m (41’1.5”), respectively, for fifth and sixth places.
Sophomore Tawana Wilson (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) chalked up two top eight finishes on Saturday as she finished fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.27, while she crossed the line fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.20.
The junior duo of twin sisters Kierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and Tierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) finished fourth and fifth in the 55 hurdles with times of 8.39 and 8.41, respectively, while junior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis (Pa.)) and freshman Jasmin Batchelor (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each added a fourth-place finish.
Hyland ran an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:57.30 in the mile to finish fourth, while Batchelor recorded a mark of 1.62m (5’4”) in the high jump to place fourth.
The only other finalist for the women was sophomore Jennifer Kalkstein (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell/St. Francis (Pa.)) who finished sixth in the 500 with a time of 1:17.22.
On the men’s side, Okoniewski, Snyder, Christmas and Hart led the way with an IC4A-qualifying time in the 4 x 800, but also made a mark in their respective individual events, as Christmas and Okoniewski finished third and sixth in the 800 with times of 1:54.73 and 1:57.29, while Hart and Snyder placed fourth and seventh in the mile with times of 4:16.43 and 4:19.44.
The duo of senior Aaron James (Glen Dale, Md./Duval) and sophomore Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) also finished at the top of the conference as they ran times of 7.52 (IC4A-qualifying) and 7.78 to finish second and fourth in the 55 hurdles, while sophomores Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Antonio Thomas (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) ran IC4A-qualifying times of 22.09 and 22.11 to finish fourth and fifth in the 200.
Arthur also claimed silver in the 55 as he was edged by just .02 of a second with a time of 6.50, while Thomas finished eighth in the 400 in 50.59 and sophomore Mike Buccheri (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan/Monmouth) and junior Cliff Bridges (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) added some more hardware for the Retrievers as Buccheri took bronze in the heptathlon with a total of 4,663 points and Bridges also placed third as he achieved a mark of 13.96m (45’9.75”) in the triple jump.
Junior Brian Pendleton (Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech) also placed in the top eight in the triple jump as he finished sixth with a mark of 13.85m (45’5.25”), while freshman Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) was fifth in the 3000 in an IC4A-qualiyfing time of 8:26.31.
Sophomore Marcus Dickerson (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) and junior Jimmy Mildenberger (Severna Park, Md./Chesapeake) rounded out the Retriever finalists as Dickerson was sixth in the 500 in 1:05.83 and Mildenberger tied for seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.83m (6’0”) and then teamed with Thomas and sophomore Jason Powell (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) to finish fourth in the 4 x 400m relay with a time of 3:19.96.
The Retrievers will return to competition next weekend as they return to Boston for the ECAC/IC4A Championships from Saturday, March 1-Sunday, March 2.
