LANDOVER, Md.—The UMBC men’s and women’s track and field teams finished competition at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex on Saturday. Junior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis (Pa.)) led all competitors with a second-place finish in the one-mile run as she picked up her second ECAC qualifying time in as many events this season.
Hyland ran a career best, ECAC-qualifying time of 5:00.82, dropping almost nine seconds off her former career best to finish second at the Terrapin Invite. The time is also the second-fastest in the history of UMBC, second only to current school record holder Cara Wettlaufer’s time of 4:55.00 set in 2005. The ECAC cut is Hyland’s second of the season after setting a new school record in an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:52.47 at last week’s Bucknell Gulden Relays.
Sophomore Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) also ran a career-best in the mile, finishing 12th in a time of 5:14.94. Gabriel dropped almost seven seconds from her previous best time of 5:21.93.
Other top performers in the track events on the women’s side included sophomore Tawana Wilson (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) who finished 10th in the 60-meter dash in 7.96 (7.91, preliminaries) and eighth in the 200 with a time of 26.56.
Sophomore Jennifer Kalkstein (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell/St. Francis (Pa.)) ran a career best in the 400, as she finished 14th with a time of 1:01.27, while sophomore Kierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) tied her career best in the 60 hurdles as she finished eighth with a time of 9.08 (9.09p). Twin sister, Tierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) placed 12th in the same event in 9.31 (9.13p).
On the field side, senior Ashley Fauntleroy (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) led the way with third and fifth place finishes in the weight throw and shot put, respectively. Fauntleroy achieved an ECAC-qualifying mark of 16.06m (52’8.25”) as she finished third in the weight throw and a mark of 13.01m (42’8.25”) in the shot put to finish fifth.
Senior Toni Boyd (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) and freshman Rachelle Wright (Fort Washington, Md./Potomac) also finished in the top 16 in the shot put and weight throw as Boyd finished 11th in the shot put with a mark of 11.89m (39’0.25”) and Wright was 11th in the weight throw in 13.05m (42’9.75”).
Freshman Jasmin Batchelor (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) was the only other top performer on the women’s side as she achieved career bests in both the high jump and triple jump. Batchelor tied for fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.60m (5’3”) and was 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 10.77m (35’4”).
On the men’s side, junior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) led the Retrievers as he was just edged out from first place in the 3000 by one one-hundredth of a second. Madison registered a career-best time of 8:46.16, dropping over nine seconds from his previous best time of 8:55.37, while the first-place finisher recorded a time of 8:46.15. Freshman Chris Bowie (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) also registered a career-best time as he finished in 10th place with a time of 8:58.18.
Junior Josh Okoniewski (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) and freshman Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 800 with times of 1:59.02 and 1:59.17, while sophomore Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) finished 10th in the 60 in 7.04 (7.06p).
Fellow sophomores Antonio Thomas (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), Marcus Dickerson (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) and Kenyan Hicks (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West/St. Francis (Pa.)) also turned in top track performances as Thomas finished fifth in the 200 (22.88), and Dickerson and Hicks were 15th and 16th in the 400 with times of 51.58 and 51.63, respectively.
Dickerson, Arthur, Thomas, and Hicks would also team together to finish third in the 4 x 400m relay with a time of 3:28.59.
The only other top track performers were sophomore Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) and senior Aaron James (Glen Dale, Md./Duval) who finished ninth and 11th in the 60 hurdles with times of 8.34 (8.34p) and 8.37 (8.25p), respectively.
On the field side, sophomore Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) led the way, finishing fourth in the pole vault with a career-best mark of 4.50m (14’9”), while junior Brian Pendleton (Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech) added two top finishes as he was seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.67m (21’10.75”) and fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.61m (44’8”).
Sophomore Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough/St. Francis (Pa.)), junior Brian Rogers (Mitchelville, Md./Bishop McNamara) and senior Brian Hairfield (Abingdon, Md./Archbishop Curley) were the only other top performers on the men’s side as Onto turned in a 13th-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.41m (21’0.5”) and Rogers and Hairfield finished eighth and 10th in the triple jump with marks of 13.13m (43’1”) and 12.72m (41’8.75”), respectively.
The Retrievers will return to competition next weekend as they travel to State College, Pa. from Friday-Saturday Jan. 25-26 for the Penn State National Open and to Fairfax, Va. on Sat. Jan. 26 for the George Mason Patriot Games.
Athletes must meet qualifying times for the Penn State meet and must be accepted with the event field normally limited to 30 participants. The meet will include over 40 teams from around the country and accepted entries and heat sheets will be posted on gopsusports.com on Wednesday afternoon.
