Hyland Shatters 3000m Record as UMBC Track and Field Competes at Bucknell Gulden Relays

    Junior Alex Hyland set a new school record in the 3000m run at the Bucknell Gulden Relays.

    LEWISBURG, Pa.—Junior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Franicis (Pa.)) set a new 3000-meter run record and was one of four Retrievers to capture gold at the Bucknell Gulden Relays on Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.

     

    Hyland ran an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:52.47 to crush the previous record of 10:06.22 set in 2006 by Stefanie Thomas, and outdistanced second-place finisher, sophomore teammate Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) by over 30 seconds.

     

    Other winners for the Retrievers included senior Ashley Fauntleroy (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch), who led a 1-2-3 sweep of the shot put, and junior Tierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and senior Aaron James (Glen Dale, Md./Duval) who won the respective women’s and men’s 60-meter hurdles.

     

    Two Retriever relay teams also took first as the men’s shuttle hurdles relay ran a time of 33.31 to best second place Mount St. Mary’s, while the women’s 4 x 400m relay team of Gregory, sophomores Jennifer Kalkstein (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell/St. Francis (Pa.)) and Tawana Wilson (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) and junior Kierra Gregory (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) claimed gold with a time of 4:07.96.

     

    Fauntleroy recorded a mark of 13.17m [43’3.75”] to win the shot put, while freshman Rachelle Wright (Fort Washington, Md./Frederick Douglass) and senior Toni Boyd (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) followed in second and third place with marks of 12.66m [41’6.5”] and 12.13m [39’9.75”], respectively.  Fauntleory and Boyd also placed second and third in the weight throw, with marks of 15.52m [50’11”] and 13.85m [45’5.25”], respectively.

     

    Wilson and sophomore Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) had another 2-3 finish, this time in the 60m dash as they ran times of 7.83 and 7.86 in the finals heat, while Tierra Gregory ran a time of 8.96 in the 60 hurdles, and her twin sister, Kierra, was ran a 9.12 to finish third.

     

    The only other top-three finish on the women’s side was the distance medley relay team of Gabriel, juniors Emily Saltsman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Suzanne Richards (Backwell, England/Longborough University), and Hyland finished second with a time of 12:41.22.

     

    On the men’s side, James and sophomore Camal Pugh (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) finished 1-2 in the 60 hurdles with times of 8.26 and 8.44, respectively, while junior Brian Pendleton (Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech) finished with a pair of bronzes as he achieved marks of 6.87m [22’6.5”] and 13.77m [45’2.25”] in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.

     

    Junior Anthony Kelhower (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) also took a third, in the 3000 as he ran a time of 8:53.01, while freshman Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) was third in the 60 in 6.98.

     

    Sophomores Kenyan Hicks (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West/St. Francis (Pa.)) and Marcus Dickerson (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) and freshman Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) were the only other top three finishers for the Retrievers as Hicks and Dickerson turned in second and third-place finishes with times of 1:06.60 and 1:06.84 in the 500 and Zwama was second in the mile in 4:26.36.

     

    The Retrievers return to competition on Saturday, Jan 19 as they travel to Landover, Md. for the Maryland Terrapin Invitational.
