KHVALINA, NOVOTNY NAMED NEC TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Lana Khvalina and junior Josef Novotny were named Northeast Conference Tennis Players of the Week for the week ending April 6, 2003.Khvalina, who earned the award back on October 22, was a perfect 3-0 at #5 singles this week, boosting her spring record to 10-1. She picked up UMBC's lone win vs. Cincinnati, besting Jill Klauck, 6-0, 6-3. After a straight set win over Quinnipiac's Liz Axler (6-2, 6-2), she earned a crucial 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Army's Pam Chavez to help UMBC to a 5-2 win. The native of Holliswood, NY is now 30-4 in her career in singles at UMBC. Novotny earns his fourth award of the year, and seventh in his brief UMBC tenure. He raised his record at #1 singles to 8-2 this spring with three straight set victories, losing just two games in the process. He defeated St. Francis' (PA) Brent Keough, 6-0, 6-1, St. John's Rick Ferreira, 6-0, 6-1, and Quinnipiac's Eric Raymundo, 6-0, 6-0. Novotny is now 27-5 all time at UMBC.
