NOVOTNY, PEDERGNANA PERFORM CLEAN SWEEP OF NEC TENNIS AWARDS FOR UMBC

3/18/2003

Josef Novotny earns his third NEC Player of the Week award of the 2002-03 season following an impressive 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 (tiebreaker) victory over Virginia’s Stephen Nolan, the #1 singles player for the 56th-ranked Cavaliers.  Novotny, a first team all-NEC performer last season, improved to 4-1 on the spring season and is the lone Retriever with a winning record to date.

Alessandra Pedergnana, a freshman who has cracked the UMBC lineup, is off to a quick start this spring for the four-time defending NEC champion Retrievers.  She did not drop a game last week in #4 flight singles victories against St. Francis (PA) and Towson.  She also teamed with Jana Karaskova for an 8-2 win at #2 doubles  vs. the Red Flash, and paired with Sarah Mostellar for an 8-4 victory at #3 doubles against the Tigers.  Pedergnana leads UMBC with eight double victories (8-1) and is 7-2 in singles.  Her 15 total victories tie her with Karaskova for the most on the team.
