TENNIS' NOVOTNY WINS CORNELL INVITATIONAL SINGLES TITLE

UMBC newcomer Josef Novotny won the A Flight Singles of the Cornell Men's Tennis Fall Outdoor Invitational in Corning, NY this weekend.The transfer from Norfolk State knocked off #2 seed John Sabia of Army, 6-3, 6-3, then defeated Rubin of Penn, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). In the semi-finals, the native of the Czech Republic won a tough three-setter over Cornell's Zach Gallin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and then defeated #1 seed, David Goldman of Yale, 6-1, 2-1, ret. to take the title. Novotny's win is UMBC's first title in the prestigious event.
