The NEC named UMBC sophomore Lana Khvalina and junior Josef Novotny men's and women's tennis Players of the Week.

Novotny, an all-NEC player at #1 singles in 2001-02, reached the semifinal round of the East Coast
Tennis Championships at Old Dominion University to earn Player of the Week honors for the first
time this season.  After receiving a first round bye, Novotny disposed of players from Old Dominion
(6-4, 6-1) and Maryland (6-4, 7-6 (1)) to set up a meeting with Zoltan Csanadi, the defending “A”
Flight champion.  Csandi ousted Novotny, 6-3, 6-4, and proceeded to defend his crown in the
finals.

Khvalina, who capped off a spectacular freshman season in 2001-02 by being named all-NEC at #4
singles, won three matches to earn a spot in the semifinals of the East Coast Tennis Championships at Old Dominion over the weekend.  She defeated “C” flight opponents from Temple (6-3, 6-2) Howard (6-3, 6-2) and North Carolina State (7-5, 6-3), before falling to Richmond's Casey Cohen in a three-setter (4-6, 7-5, 6-0).  She also teamed with Aimee Lim to reach the “C” flight doubles final following wins over Connecticut (8-2) and James Madison (8-1).  The duo dropped an 8-1decision in the title match against Old Dominion.
