FOUR RETRIEVERS MAKE SEMI-FINALS AT EAST COAST TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Norfolk, VA--Junior Joe Novotny and three women's players all earned spots in the semi-final round of the East Coast Tennis Championships, held at Old Dominion University this weekend. After receiving a first round bye, Novotny disposed of players from Old Dominion (6-4, 6-1) and Maryland (6-4, 7-6 (1)), where he faced ODU's Zoltan Csanadi. Csanadi, the defending A Flight champion, defeated Novotny, 6-3, 6-4, and proceeded to defend his crown in the finals. Freshman Ale Pedergnana (B flight), sophomore Lana Khvalina (C) and freshman Veena Rao (D) all won three matches to get into the semi-final round. Pedergnana won matches vs. Miami (6-2, 7-5), Richmond (6-1, 6-3) and James Madison (6-3, 7-5), before falling to eventual champion Marta Bechliwinas of Virginia, 6-1, 6-0. Khavalina won matches over Temple, 6-3, 6-2, Howard, 6-3, 6-2, and N.C. State, 7-5, 6-3, before falling to Richmond's Casey Cohen in a three-setter, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Rao won a pair of matches, 6-4, 6-4 over Davidson, and 6-3, 6-3 over George Mason, before falling to eventual titlist, Martinia Vondrova of Norfolk State, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles action, the C flight team of Khvalina and Aimee Lim made it to the finals with wins over U. Conn (8-2) and James Madison (8-1) and a default, but lost in the finals, 8-1, to Old Dominion.
