5/26/2009
Carapcea, who earned Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All American honors last spring, was UMBC’s co-salutatorian at graduation ceremonies on May 21.
National award winners will be announced on June 11, 2009.
Her accomplishments on the tennis courts include 97 career match victories, All-Conference honors in 2007-08 and a perfect 8-0 record in America East Championship competition. Off the court, she completed a double major in information systems/financial economics and maintained a 4.00 grade-point average. She has been inducted into the National Collegiate Honor Society, earned UMBC’s 2008-09 Matt Skalsky Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award, and was recently named to the America East Conference women’s tennis All-Academic team.
The at-large squad consists of student-athletes in the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving and tennis.
Carapcea is the second women’s tennis player to earn multiple honors, as Lana Khvalina was cited in both 2003 and 2004. Eight of UMBC’s nine honorees have been recognized since 1997.
