New Haven, Conn.—Seniors Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea spearheaded fourth-seeded UMBC’s 4-0 win over No. 5-seeded Albany in the quarterfinal round of the America East Conference Women’s Tennis Championships held at the Yale Tennis Center. The Retrievers advance to Saturday’s semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Boston University at 1:00 p.m. The Terriers have won the last 15 America East women’s tennis titles. Carapcea and Adewumi defeated Charlotte Tatler and Holly Smith at No. 2 doubles, 8-1 and the Retriever won the doubles points as sophomore Ana Mungo and junior Alice Chen defeated Susan Ma/Laine Mackey, 8-4, at the No. 1 slot. In singles, Carapcea ousted Tatler, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles and Adewumi defeated Smith, 6-2, 6-1. Mungo captured the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, over Ma to give UMBC the four points necessary to take the match. The men open play on Saturday, as the third-seeded Retrievers face second-seeded Binghamton in the semifinal round at 10:00 a.m.
