Meyer, Doubles Duos Highlight Tennis' Play at Sergio Tacchini College Invitational

    The UMBC tennis teams had several outstanding performances in a great field at the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational in Hampton Roads, Va.

    On the men’s side, junior Chris Meyer (New Market, Md./Urbana) made a run to the finals in A-2 singles. He defeated players from Drexel, Delaware and Coastal Carolina, before falling in three tough sets (7-5, 3-6, 6-4) to Emil Lindgren from 32nd-ranked VCU.

    UMBC’s A-1 doubles tandem of senior Nick Savage-Pollock (Montreal, Quebec) and Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia) also made it to the finals, before dropping a tough 9-7 decision to Perez/Ramos of Coastal Carolina.

    On the women’s side, UMBC’s efforts were highlighted by the play of junior Barbara Couto (Teresopolis, Brazil) and freshman Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) in the B-2 doubles competition. The duo won a pair of matches vs. tandems from Loyola and Towson before dropping an 8-5 decision to Penn State’s Lotto/Mical.

    The teams that participated were Penn State, Virgina Tech, VCU, Old Dominion, Pitt, GW, George Mason, Coastal Carolina, Delaware, Drexel, Howard, Norfolk State, Villanova, Towson, James Madison, Liberty, Hampton, Lafayette, Loyola, and NJIT.
