Fredi Voorman won a singles and doubles title this weekend at Georgetown

UMBC junior Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia) and sophomore Ana Mungo (Summit, N.J.) headlined outstanding weekends for Retriever tennis as both players won “A” flight singles titles at the Georgetown Classic and Quinnipiac Invitational tournaments respectively.

After a first round bye, Voorman, seeded fourth, won four straight set victories over opponents from GW, Howard, Georgetown and James Madison before facing unseeded Ugur Atalay from George Washington. Voorman captured the first set, 6-4, dropped the second, 5-7, before taking the deciding set, 6-3.

But the Retriever standout was not finished. He combined with senior Nick Savage-Pollock (Montreal, Que.) to take the doubles event as well. The fourth-seeded duo dispatched tandems from Georgetown, James Madison, Georgetown before vanquishing the third-seeded team of Smith/Maaranen from from James Madison, 8-3.

In Hamden, Conn., Mungo led the way as the Retrievers won three of the four singles flights and the “B” flight doubles competition. Mungo defeated Mary Wilson of the host school, 6-4, 6-3 to capture her flight, while senior Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) triumphed in the “C” flight and freshman Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) debuted by winning the “D” flight. Carapcea won in straight sets over Belfin Sunbul of Seton Hall, 6-4, 6-3, while Jackman faced teammate  Lauren Hamilton (Yardley, Pa.) in the title match. Jackman prevailed over her classmate, 6-1, 2-6 (10-8).  

Jackman replicated Voorman’s feat by also winning a doubles title. She teamed with junior Barbara Couto (Teresopolis, Brazil) to take the “B” flight doubles, 9-7 over Pam Emery/Amanda Barletta of Rhode Island.
