CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - UMBC has swept America East Tennis Performer of the Week honors for the week ending April 14. The Retrievers' Fredi Voorman (Tallinn, Estonia) and Pascaline Cette (Menton, France/St. Joseph) were tabbed the week's top players on the men's and women's side, respectively.

Voorman, a sophomore, won all three of his singles matches last week, including a three-set victory over Navy at fifth singles, which keyed the Retrievers' first-ever win over the Midshipmen. Voorman, who has missed most of the spring season with a hand injury, also posted straight-set victories over Stony Brook and Delaware. In doubles, Voorman paired up with teammate Chris Meyer to improve to 5-1 at the third position with wins over Navy and SBU.

Cette, a senior, extended her win streak to nine as she won all three of her matches at third singles last week. Cette, who improved to 19-5 overall on the season and just recorded her 100^th career victory over Fairleigh Dickinson yesterday, posted singles wins over West Virginia, Stony Brook and Howard last week.

UMBC finished the regular seasons in tennis on extended victory streaks as both the men’s and women’s teams defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 5-2 in matches played in Teaneck, N.J. on Tuesday. The women won their final 12 matches of the season to finish the campaign at 13-3, while the men have taken seven straight matches and head into the America East Tournament at 14-4.

On the women’s side, UMBC shook off some indifferent doubles play of late and cruised in the two doubles matches played to earn that point. Reigning America East Performer of the Week No. 3 Pascaline Cette led four Retrievers with straight set victories in singles, as she defeated Dzana Ferhatbegovic, 6-4, 6-2. It was Cette’s tenth consecutive singles victory, while junior No. 4 Cornelia Carapcea won her 11^th in 12 matches in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jessica DeCarlos.

The men’s match followed the same pattern, as UMBC’s top two doubles teams triumphed, and the Nos. 3-6 singles players also came away with wins. The men’s matches were more tightly played as No. 3 senior Irfan Shamasdin edged Josh Girling, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and No. 5  Fredi Voorman, the reigning America East Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week, nipped Kyle Eddins, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 1-0 (4).

The America East Tournament for both squads takes place April 25-27 in New Haven, Conn.
