3/5/2008

UMBC Head Tennis Coach Keith Puryear has been named 2007 Mid-Atlantic College Coach of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). Puryear will be honored on Saturday, March 8 at the 2008 USPTA Mid-Atlantic Convention at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

Puryear is entering his 19th season as the men’s coach at UMBC and his 17th season at the helm of the women. Last year, the men won their first America East Conference title and earned a berth in the NCAA Championships. Moreover, the men received the program’s first invitation to the ECAC Invitational this fall at the United States Tennis Center and finished 12th out of 16 teams in the prestigious tournament.

The women were the America East runners-up last season, falling in the championship match to league powerhouse Boston University.

Entering the 2007-08 season, Puryear has won 415 matches as a collegiate tennis coach, owns a 58.5 winning percentage and has earned nine conference Coach of the Year honors in the past decade. His men’s teams have appeared in five NCAA Tournaments (2000-2003, 2007), while the women have also made five trips (1999-2003) to NCAA competition.
